Summary:
Both iPhone models come in 4 colors, the iPhone 11 Pro Max comes in Midnight green, Silver, Space Grey, and Gold while the 12 Pro Max comes in Silver, Graphite, Pacific blue, and Gold
The obvious aesthetic difference between the 11/12 Pro Max is the squared-off edge look from the iPhone 5 redesigned into a stainless steel frame.
In addition, The newly released phone features slimmer bezels that accommodate a larger screen without ‘greatly’ increasing the phone's overall size and weight. The iPhone 11 Pro Max's 6.5-inch screen is now 6.7 inches in the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
As opposed to the gorilla glass screen on the 11 Pro Max, the 12 pro max comes with a ceramic shield screen which gives the phone a 4x better drop performance than the 11 Pro Max.
Unlike the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the 12 Pro Max supports 5G and comes with an A14 Bionic processor. Speaking of 5G, the driving sales force behind this model is the 5G connectivity. After series of tests, the battery lasted roughly 9 hours with the 5G which is expected as 5G was foreseen to drain the battery hence, the reason "Smart Data mode" was introduced by Apple to selectively switch to 4G when fast, high def data downloaded isn't needed.
The 11 Pro Max camera has 12-megapixel (wide), 12-megapixel (ultra-wide), 12-megapixel (telephoto) just like the 12 Pro Max. However, the iPhone 12 Pro Max does better with its overall optical zooming range, of 2.5x optical zoom-out as against the 2x of the 11 Pro Max even though the difference is barely noticeable, So, if you're a daytime shooter there's really no need to upgrade.
Apple also made the wide camera sensor better for low-light pictures, introduced night mode to portrait, and the ultra-wide camera now has night mode on the 12 Pro Max as well.
Verdict:
The already discontinued 11 Pro Max, is still an excellent phone, with a high-resolution OLED display, three-camera array (with Deep Fusion technology), and a sleek matte-glass finish. You'll also save about $100 by going with last year's model, which is far from pocket change.
Asides from the 5G connectivity, faster processor with the A14 Bionic chip as-well-as the low light performance and faster auto-focus (sounds like a lot, I know!) you're really not missing much.
So, if you're really not upgrading from an X or older model, I suggest you stick to the 11 pro max for another year. I mean the 12 Pro Max is incredibly solid on every front and will serve you well, but so will your 11 Pro Max.
