What is Harmony OS?
Harmony OS styled as HarmonyOS, is an open-source, free, microkernel-based distributed operating system developed by Huawei with a BSD 3-Clause license. Unveiled on 9 August 2019, the platform is designed primarily for the Internet of things devices.
Harmony OS is based on Linux which is the same open-source platform on which Andriod is based. This means that Andriod and Harmony can share compatibility with one another.
For Mobile operating systems, there are only 2 solutions around; Andriod and iOS. With the stern grip of apple on its iOS, it means Andriod is the only solution for OEMs building their own smartphones. Andriod is still very much dependent on google despite being open-source, that's all thanks to Google's grip on GMS and its entire ecosystem of interdependency around the GMS framework. With the recent toggle Huawei has been facing with the US ban it has decided to soar and drop its own HMS solutions~If I will never give up was a person.
Initially, Huawei announced that it will only use Harmony OS on Internet of Things products. Meaning, it would stick to android for smartphones, which it has done so far. However, it is evident that sometime in the future which is now, Harmony OS become a Huawei OS that will power everything it produces. Huawei has embarked on its transition away from GMS-less Andriod onto its own first-party OS
Huawei released its Mate series without any Google app whatsoever, for the first couple of months, the phone was only available in China and other small countries before it made it to the West. Unbelievably, the series sold exceptionally well~talk about China supporting their very own.
Anyhoo... Huawei in its annual developer conference, The company announced that its devices will ditch Andriod in favor of HarmonyOS in 2021. Though it's a little early to tell what HarmonyOS will have in store.
Huawei HarmonyOS powered devices are coming sometime in 2021 which is a couple of months away, HarmonyOS is already functioning in different ways. You see, it isn't just smartphones that ride on the wave of the HarmonyOS, a bunch of other smart devices is already caught up in this wave. The OS is available in 20 product categories. One of these smart devices is the HarmonyOS-powered smartwatch which a demo of the watches internal revealed a little of what to expect with the HarmonyOS.
Below is a video showing the demo.
Once HarmonyOS for smartphones launches next year, Users of EMUI11 will be able to update to HarmonyOS despite its difference from Android OS
Today, December 16, Huawei Developer Day was held in Beijing, China. The tech colossus revealed that the HarmonyOS 2.0 beta for smartphones is now available for developers This is an interesting win for the company giving the rollercoaster year they have had since the ban by the US.
In all, it is an exciting step forward but potentially a perilous one. With Huawei ditching Andriod completely, will the company's phones continue to interest its European consumers? or will it become a full-time device for the Chinese people?
